The R4i SDHC Kernel is the softwar that essentially runs or operates your R4i SDHC card.  Without the kernel installed on to your microSD card, you won't be able to load any of your files from the micro sd card at all.  While you will be able to store games, movies, music and eBooks on the micro SD card, when you actually place the R4i SDHC in to the NDSi console and power up - it will appear as if though there were no R4i card installed at all into the console.

Downloading the right R4i SDHC kernel means the difference between being frustrated by not being able to figure out why on earth your R4i card won't work - and having a great experience right out of the box.  You may be wondering why you would even have to think about the kernel for the r4i sdhc.  And rightfully so.  This is something that used to be included in each and every box right from the factory.  However, that has since stopped, and the makers now want everyone to download the latest version directly as opposed to getting an outdated r4i sdhc kernal in the box.
